This morning we left the hotel early to drive to the town of Mielno on the Baltic Sea.
First, I blew up my hair dryer and blew the fuse to my room. Thanks Lori for letting me use your hair dryer. And your adaptor. And your electricity. :)
Dorota met us to embark on our journey. Darius was our driver, a Professional Driver employed by the probation district to drive the Chief Probation Officer. On our 4-hour drive, we learned that traffic rules are different in Poland. For example, if you are passing a car and there is someone coming in on-coming traffic, they just move over and get out of the way.....Darius gives new meaning to tailgating.
When we arrived in Mielno, we met up with Irena, the Chief Probation Officer, and Ava, also a Probation Officer. We joined other POs at the conference for lunch in the conference center. We then went to "Say hello to the sea", a Polish tradition. We were able to walk into the water, despite the fact that it was about 35 degrees!
After this we drove to Kolobrzeg, a small resort town about 30 miles from Mielno. We were joined for this trip by Lydia, another PO. While at this town we were able to visit the Old Market Square, a picturesque shopping area. After shopping there, we went seaside and walked along a walking path before visiting a historic lighthouse. It was a beautiful sight!
When we returned to the conference center in Mielno, we joined the others at the conference for a bonfire celebration. We had the chance to meet many of the employees of the district and enjoy good food and company. Judge Peter Hejduk returned for the event as well.
Then off to bed to get a good night's sleep before our presentations the next morning.....
